Instrument of Immortality is a running verse expressing the poet’s personal perspectives on multidimensional issues covering the mystery of death and life, love and creations of love, its place in engendering bliss and sustainable human relationship for better societies with specific references to great poets. An admixture of free-flowing poetry and outpouring of pockets of verified stories, personal feelings and experiences, Umar Yogiza, successfully holds the reader spellbound from the very first line to the finish line itching for unfolding relatable novelties. Like any work of art, this one is akin to laying a foundation for further growth and development.
Author, Crossroads & The Rubicon, president of Poets in Nigeria Initiative.
In a world expanding and further splitting into many spectra of identities, Umar Yogiza Jnr. in instrument of immortality reminds us of the only identity that connects us all as humans; Death, the inverse of life.
instrument of immortality is replete with repetitive undertones of this less traveled road—death.
At some point—as you read through this marathon of a verse, you take a deep breath and shut your eyes to the fickleness of existence. At a spot, like me, you become an echo trapped in the nothingness that is life, where either fear or peace envelops you with solitude.
Yogiza with intentional repetitions reminds us that:
‘to die was to find life
and to live is to search for death’
At some other station, instrument of immortality becomes a kaleidoscope of memory. The mastery of words is almost surreal, and completely philosophical, as is seen in the following lines:
‘everything on earth is in retrospect
a glide of spoken words
heard but unseen’
One amazing beauty of this piece is its ability to retain “the voice” and “voices”, namely, a collective of the universal voice, in a single poem. This continuous run-off of voices can only be the handiwork of a poet who has mastered the functionality of language. And above all, a poet who understands the intricacies of living and loving in a world controlled by incomprehensible forces, as the poet captures it in the following lines:
fate has the same pictures of us infinitely
photographed by darkness and light
In instrument of immortality, Yogiza is both prophet and poet spinning truths and opening up a body of conversations. This lyrical narrative-verse will leave you with more than enough meanings to think through and through. But remember,
‘there are intricate problems
science in its zenith cannot solve.
Author of ‘flames of the forest, winner of 2015 Korea/Nigeria Poetry Prize.
In instrument of immortality, Yogiza grabs you by the cuff and pulls you into a breathless and breezy spin as you journey through space and time contemplating mortality and immortality. His sustained masterly intensity belies a skill garnered from adebutant. Yogiza is a revolution to watch.
